Final Key Take-Aways

This pyramid demonstrates how we believe that every topic we have studied in this class builds off of one another. Our key take-aways from each unit show the connections between the units and how they come full circle in making us better leaders in the business world.

STEP 1: Beginning at the base one has no knowledge: first you need to know yourself—what is your personality, what are your tendencies, what are your attitudes and triggers (emotions and moods, understanding when you are having an emotional response to a stimulus and when you are in a different mood from your natural equilibrium). You also must learn to manage emotions and behaviors to positive outcomes. In business, self-management is necessary. Employees need to think before they act and redirect disruptive moods and impulses. People are attracted to and selected by organizations that match their values, and they leave organizations that are not compatible with their personalities. When people are content with varying job facets, including nature of the work, present pay, work environment, co-worker relations, supervision, etc., they possess high job satisfaction. Job satisfaction, being an attitude, has a behavioral component. In other words, a happy worker is a good worker.
STEP 2: After knowing yourself, know others: what are the other personalities and what do they mean—why do other people act the way that they do? How can understanding other peoples’ differences help us to work toward a greater common goal (understanding diverse groups and with that knowledge working to get different personalities work together well). Social awareness – Can you accurately read others emotions and moods as you interact with a group? The ability to understand the emotional makeup of others and change your management style depending on who you are dealing with is key to effective leadership.
STEP 3: After you understand yourself and others through your skills of self awareness and social awareness, you can then manage relationships more effectively. Relationship management is an important factor in leadership and teamwork. You need to create constructive work relationships through collaboration, building bonds, and developing and influencing others. Creating diversity, managing diversity, and retaining diversity are other essential parts of working in a successful company. By hiring a diverse workforce you can attract a diverse consumer market. A successful company places a high importance on diversity by training leaders to effectively advocate and manage a diverse workforce of employees so that they feel included and valued for their different strengths and abilities.
STEP 4: Managing diversity is one of the many things a good leader must take into account. Being a strong leader consists of demonstrating use of the managerial grid, which entails finding the right balance between having a concern for people and production. A good leader also shows characteristics of both a transformational leader – motivating, inspiring and changing people – and a transactional leader – focusing on production through offering rewards and punishments rather than focusing on relationships with workers. Being a leader requires decision-making and ethics being taken into account. When faced with right vs. right situations, a good leader should be able to distinguish what follows his/her own values. It is important to understand different ways to think of ethics and look at ethical dilemmas from different perspectives. There is no universal code of ethics and when it comes down to it, it is up to the individual to decide what is the most ethical approach. Everyone faces ethical decision-making in their life and should have an understanding of ethical principles, but it is especially important when that person is a leader and has influence over other people’s lives.
          To conclude our blog and to finish off the connecting circles between all of the topics we covered, here is a YouTube video that shows how all of these topics of Personality, Emotional Intelligence, Attitudes, Diversity, Ethics, and Leadership are all related to leaders in many different walks of life.
These leaders have left legacies of greatness because of their courage, their determination, their character, and their ability to inspire others. We all agree that the lessons we have learned through our class work in Individuals in Organizations have motivated and inspired us to become better leaders. Now we have a more clear idea of what kind of leaders we want to be, what it will take to get there, and what kind of legacy we want to leave in the business world.
